Lady
Gators have no trouble with Assumption
By PETER WAGUESPACK
Courier Correspondent March 30, 2005
At Bourg, South Terrebonne scored six runs in the first
inning and four in the fourth to easily defeat the Assumption Lady
Mustangs, 11-0 in district action. The game was called after the fifth
inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Sue LeBlanc drilled an RBI single, Bree Fortenberry laced a two-run double
and Baudoin walked to force in another run home in the opening frame.
The Lady Gators batted around in the fourth. LeBlanc added two more RBIs
in the frame on two fielder’s choices. Fortenberry picked up another RBI
and pitcher Kallie Deroche and Baudoin each walked to forcce in two more
runs for South Terrebonne.
Deroche went the distance and got the victory for South Terrebonne while
Hock suffered the loss for the Lady Mustangs.

HOUMA -- South Terrebonne’s Sadie Hughes beat out a bunt with one out in
the top of the seventh inning on Monday at Vandebilt Catholic in a
District 8-4A softball game.
In most cases, the play would have been rather routine
But Hughes’ infield single broke up a no-hit bid by Vandebilt’s Meagan
Price, and produced the loudest cheer of the day from Lady Gators fans.
Price led the Lady Terriers (16-2-1, 2-0 district) to a 6-0 victory by
pitching a complete game, striking out nine batters and walking two
batters.
"Early on we had difficulty even making connections," South
Terrebonne coach Valerie Cooper said. "She did a good job of keeping
all our hitters off balance, even our better hitters. It’s a credit to
her. She’s a solid, outstanding pitcher."
South Terrebonne (10-9-1, 0-1) had three base runners in the game. Breanne
Fortenberry broke up Price’s perfect game by drawing a walk in the fifth
inning.
Saddi Baudoin also drew a walk off Price in the sixth inning.
"I thought Meagan did really well," Vandebilt coach Margaret
Johnson said. "She pitched the pitches she needed to pitch. Overall,
I was pleased. I was glad to get this one in."
The game was originally scheduled for March 15, but because of rain was
moved to March 16, when it was again moved because of wet field
conditions.
Vandebilt scored a run in the first inning after Erica Breaux (2-for-4,
two RBIs, two runs) singled and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat
of Lindsey Martinez.
The Lady Terriers, which had 10 hits, did most of their damage with a
four-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Breaux.
Lauren Martinez (3-for-4) added an RBI single, and Price brought in a run
with a fielder’s choice.
The Lady Terriers scored a run in the fifth inning after Price singled and
courtesy runner Anna Wheeler scored on a single by Katherine Ellender
(2-for-3, RBI).
Kallie Deroche started for South Terrebonne, before giving way to Allyson
LeCompte in the second inning.
LeCompte faced three batters before Deroche reentered the circle and
pitched the rest of the way.
"That’s the thing about these kids," Cooper said.
"Regardless of the time, place or score, they’re going to play for
me and give me everything they have. I was pleased with the effort.
Vandebilt is a great team, and we’ll get better each game."
Vandebilt beat John Curtis 6-4 on Thursday in River Ridge to open District
8-4A play.
The Lady Terriers also won four games over the weekend, which included a
1-0 victory over previously undefeated Denham Springs.

District 8-4A race should
be tough
By KELLY McELROY March 17, 2005
The Courier
Over the past three seasons, District 8-4A has proved to be one of the
toughest softball leagues in the state.
Vandebilt Catholic and John Curtis, who along with South Terrebonne and
Assumption make up the district, have played for the Class 4A title the
last two seasons with John Curtis winning both.
The District 8-4A season begins at 4 p.m. today with South Terrebonne at
Vandebilt and Assumption at John Curtis.
VANDEBILT CATHOLIC
The Lady Terriers finished runner-up to John Curtis in both the district
and the state last season, but Vandebilt lost just three starters from
that team.
One key returner this year is pitcher Megan Price, who logged most of the
innings for the Lady Terriers (10-2-1) last season.
"Megan is Megan," Vandebilt coach Margaret Johnson, in her 14th
season, said. "She is an even-keeled athlete. That’s the kind of
athlete you want out there. She’s done a great job. She’s a good
leader, a team player and a good athlete."
Kristin Domangue could also see action in the circle for the Lady Terriers
this season.
Katherine Ellender is the catcher, and Gabby LeMaire is at first base.
At second base, third base and in right field, Lauren Martinez, Kayla
Dudek and Maddie Constant have all seen time.
"Right now we’ve been trying some different lineups," Johnson
said. "We’re looking for some good things."
Anna Wheeler was the starting right fielder, but she is out for the season
recovering from mononucleosis.
Ellen Kennedy was playing a lot at second base, but recently injured her
knee and is also out.
Erica Breaux is the shortstop, and Colleen Terhune (center field) and
Lindsey Martinez (left field) make up the remainder of the outfield.
Despite the graduation of All-state performer Jessica Barksdale of John
Curtis, who is now at Nicholls, Johnson expects the Lady Patriots to again
be tough.
"They have the Brignac girl who is only a sophomore and who I think
throws harder than (Barksdale)," Johnson said. "She’s the real
deal. She’s got some stuff going. From what I was told, they have a
good, strong hitting team. One through five is for power, but they can all
hit the ball. They are well-coached, and what helps them is that they all
play summer ball."
SOUTH TERREBONNE
After 10 years away, Valerie Cooper has returned as coach of the South
Terrebonne softball team.
She coached at the school for 15 years, leading the program to state
runner-up finishes in 1989 and 1992.
"I think South Terrebonne is going to be strong," Johnson said.
"They have a good coach in Valerie. She knows the game and knows how
to motivate them. I think South Terrebonne is going to be a good little
team."
South Terrebonne placed third in the district last season, and lost to
Redemptorist in the first round of the playoffs.
The Lady Gators return a number of players.
Pitcher Kallie Deroche is back and so is catcher Sue LeBlanc.
Mary LeBlanc, Sadie Hughes, Kristy Badeaux, Allyson LeCompte, Breanne
Fortenberry, Virginia Falgout and Saadi Baudin will be key contributors.
Cooper said the team has a number of players who can play a number of
different positions.
Also looking to contribute will be Danielle Smith, Katie Romero, Megan
Martin, Erin Carrere and Aimee Duplantis.
The Lady Gators are 9-5-1 and won their own Down the Bayou Tournament
earlier in the season.

Offensive outburst propels
Lady Gators
By PETER WAGUESPACK
Courier Correspondent March 2, 2005
HOUMA - They say in the game of baseball or softball, all you need is one
big inning, and you will have a good chance at winning. The South
Terrebonne Lady Gators softball team got two huge innings to lift them to
a 10-5 victory over Ellender Memorial on Tuesday at the Lady Patriots’
diamond.
The Lady Gators scored six runs in the top of the second inning and four
more in the fourth to put away Ellender.
The Lady Patriots quickly found themselves leading 1-0 in the bottom of
the first inning on an RBI single by starting pitcher Vernell Solet.
South Terrebonne (6-2) rebounded in a hurry as it sent 11 batters to the
plate to score six runs on three hits in the top of the second inning.
With the bases loaded, Kristy Badeaux walked to give the Lady Gators a 2-1
lead. Badeaux’s walk was the first of three consecutive bases on balls
in the frame. The second walk of the inning, to Sue LeBlanc, allowed
another runner to come home. Solet then uncorked a wild pitch, which
scored Virginia Falgout, who hit a fielder’s choice to reach base
earlier in the inning. Bree Fortenberry then drilled a two-run single to
give the Lady Gators a 6-1 cushion.
Ellender (0-6) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third. Liz
Higginbottom led off with a single. Christy Vargas followed with a walk.
Natalie Dehart then drove in Higginbottom with a sharply hit single up the
middle. A throwing error by South Terrebonne allowed Vargas to score to
make the score 6-3.
Solet hit an RBI groundout to bring home the Lady Patriots’ third run of
the frame. Kristi Fitch lined out to end the scoring threat.
The Lady Gators put the game away in the top half of the fourth. They
scored four runs in the inning, with three scoring off Lady Patriots
errors.
Jessica Guidry relieved Solet in the top of the fifth, allowed only three
South Terrebonne base runners and struck out three batters.
The Lady Patriots added their final run of the contest in the bottom of
the seventh on another Dehart RBI single.
South Terrebonne coach Valerie Cooper said she was pleased but cautious
about the victory.
"We came out and established some runs, but it’s like our defense
sort of got too overconfident," she said.
"But you got to give credit to Ellender. They played hard. Each time
we play, we need to ëtake a lesson learned’ approach and look at each
individual mistake that we make and learn from it."
Ellender coach Julie Rodriguez said she was encouraged by her team’s
effort.
"Our girls played as a team, and had a little more confidence than
the other games we’ve played," she said. "South Terrebonne is
very good. They have great pitching, hitting and fielding, but our team
kept fighting and did not give up. We just have to keep building on this
momentum...and keep going on from there."
Kallie Deroche pitched a complete game for the Lady Gators to earn the
victory. She struck out seven Lady Patriots hitters and walked only four
in seven innings.

South Terrebonne beats
South Lafourche in tournament finale
By JASON CORBIN
Courier Correspondent FEB 27, 2005
BOURG -- South Lafourche coach Phil Bychurch saw his team give up big
innings in its first two games of the Down the Bayou Classic.
To his dismay, the South Terrebonne Lady Gators rocked the Lady Tarpons
for another one in the tournament finale to take an 8-2 victory.
Sue LeBlanc’s two-run double to left field in the bottom of the second
inning highlighted a five-run frame by South Terrebonne.
Kristy Badeaux and Mary LeBlanc scored on LeBlanc’s hit to widen the
Lady Gators’ lead to 5-1.
South Terrebonne sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, racking up
four hits and two walks off South Lafourche pitcher Allie Melancon.
LeBlanc led her team with a single, double and three RBIs.
The Lady Gators finished with nine hits and drew five walks. Designated
hitter Erin Carrere was hit by pitch twice by Melancon.
South Lafourche (0-4) also committed three errors.
"We play hard every game," said Bychurch. "We just made a
couple of mistakes, and that led to big innings for the other teams. But
we played well over the tournament and will improve."
South Terrebonne pitcher Allyson LeCompte gave up four hits, struck out
seven and walked one.
The Lady Gators (6-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning.
Melancon walked Mary LeBlanc and Badeaux on nine pitches.
Sue LeBlanc singled to load the bases, and Katie Romero grounded into a
double play, which scored LeBlanc.
A South Lafourche error allowed the Lady Gators’ second run to cross.
In the top of the second, Brittany Danos, who scored both of South
Lafourche runs, doubled and scored on a Melissa Guidry bunt for the Lady
Tarpons’ first run of the game.
In the top of the fourth, Jerrica Crosby doubled to score Danos.
"I feel like it was a great tournament," Lady Gators coach
Valerie Cooper said. "The parents and kids worked feverishly to get
the field ready. We had to shorten the games to five innings, but we got
them all in, and everyone got a chance to play."
South Terrebonne (6-2) won its pool with the victory over South Lafourche
along with 6-0 and 12-10 wins over E.D. White Catholic and Terrebonne,
respectively.
Thibodaux won the other pool by defeating East Jefferson 10-1, Central
Lafourche 3-1 and Ellender Memorial, 12-5.

BOURG -- Before the Ellender Memorial Lady Patriots could settle in on
defense Tuesday afternoon they were trailing, 6-0.
The first six batters for South Terrebonne scored, and the Lady Gators got
a combined pitching effort from Kallie Deroche and Allyson LeCompte in a
7-2 nondistrict victory over Ellender at the South Terrebonne softball
field.
"It’s a different game without the first inning," first-year
Ellender coach Julie Rodriguez said. "The first inning, we struggled.
But without that, we would have been right in it. We didn’t stop
fighting. We kept them at six for while, and we weren’t shutout, so that’s
a positive."
Ellender starting pitcher Vernell Solet walked the first five batters she
faced, before Jessica Guidry, who went the rest of the way for the Lady
Patriots (0-2), entered to pitch.
"I think we came out and we looked at a lot of pitches," South
Terrebonne coach Valerie Cooper said. "We made good contact. We hit
the ball well."
With South Terrebonne (2-1) ahead 2-0, Deroche delivered a two-run double
off Guidry that brought home Sue LeBlanc and Kristy Badeaux.
Bre Fortenberry followed with a fielder’s choice that scored a run and
Saddi Baudoin (two hits) added an RBI single that gave South Terrebonne
the quick 6-0 lead.
That’s the way the score stayed until LeCompte entered in the top of the
fifth inning, and Ellender scored its two runs.
Natalie Dehart singled, took second base on a sacrifice bunt by Dana Solet,
and took third base on a single by Ashley Doucet.
Brandi Roach followed with a hit that scored Dehart, and Doucet later
scored on a throwing error that made the South Terrebonne lead 6-2.
The Lady Gators added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning after
Fortenberry singled and scored on an error.
Deroche got the victory after working four shut-out innings, giving up two
hits striking out six and walking one.
"Kallie is a senior and she’s got a lot of confidence." Cooper
said. "She’s really throwing well."
LeCompte worked three innings, gave up one earned run, two hits, struck
out four and walked one.
Guidry worked six innings in relief for Ellender, gave up no earned runs,
six hits, struck out two and walked three.
"They did a good job putting in their younger pitcher, and she came
in and threw an outstanding game," Cooper said. "We became a
little bit too aggressive trying to build on the lead. But overall, I was
very much pleased with the entire game."
Both teams made two errors.
Doucet, the Ellender left fielder, made three putouts, and at second base,
Christy Vargas made an over-the-shoulder catch in the bottom of the sixth
inning.
South Terrebonne made numerous defensive changes late in the game.
"We have a lot of good all-around players who can play a lot of
different positions, and we are grateful for that," Cooper said.
"We’re looking for the best combinations. We are able to mix it
around and change it up."
South Terrebonne will host the Down the Bayou Classic beginning at 3:30
p.m. Thursday when Ellender plays Thibodaux.
The tournament features eight teams in two pools and concludes with a
championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday.

SOUTH TERREBONNE
New coach Valerie Cooper used the jamboree to finally see all of her
players on the field. The Lady Gators picked up a 3-0 win over Ellender
and tied Patterson, 0-0.
"I was very pleased that we had all of our team intact,"
Cooper said. "This was the first time we have been on the same
field playing as a team. We still need to adjust our hitting,
communication and base running, but I guess I’m pleased."
The Lady Gators will host H.L. Bourgeois on Tuesday.
