LAB SAFETY

Flinn Scientific Safety Resource Page

  1. Wear proper eye protection at all times during laboratory activities and demonstrations.
  2. Confine long hair and loose clothing.  Remember that hair and clothing are extremely flammable.
  3. Do not put anything into your mouth (food, gum, pencils, etc.)  Dangerous chemicals may get into your mouth or lungs!  Never smell any chemical unless instructed to do so.  When testing for odors, use a wafting motion to direct the odors to your nose.
  4. Do only the experiments assigned or approved by teachers.  Follow all instructions, both written and oral, carefully.  Unauthorized experiments are prohibited (not allowed)!  Never conduct experiments alone in the laboratory.
  5. Act in a responsible manner at all times.  Never engage in horseplay or practical jokes.
  6. Do not bring animals into the science classroom or laboratory unless authorized by the teacher.
  7. Do not bring or remove chemicals and other similar substances to or from the classroom or laboratory unless authorized by the teacher.
  8. Know the location and operation of emergency equipment.  Wash your hands thoroughly after every lab.  Keep your lab station clean, dry and uncluttered to prevent accidents.
  9. Check all materials and equipment when it is given to you.  Treat all laboratory materials with respect.  Never stir anything using a thermometer.  Properly dispose of materials when instructed.  Carefully clean all laboratory equipment after each use.
  10. In case of spills, injuries, accidents, or emergencies, do not panic or run.  Notify the teacher immediately!
