Computer Usage Guidelines

for library, classrooms, and lab

The following guidelines are in addition to our District's A.U.P.

MMS Procedures & Guidelines for Students and Faculty

  1. A computer must be logged onto the network in order to have network privileges, such as printing, use of some programs, and/or the Internet.
    1. User Name: mmsstudent or (first 3, first 4 for teachers)
    2. Password: (Mmsstudent1) or (Teacher’s password, must have been set up on network.)
    3. Domain: TPSD (for everyone to use the network)

After typing the password, press ENTER on the Network Login Screen. (Pressing CANCEL will not allow network usage.)

  1. Before anyone (faculty, staff, and/or students) can use the Internet at school, an Acceptable Use Policy must be signed and filed.

  1. Students should be carefully monitored by an adult at all times when using computers at school.
  1. Care should be exercised when using equipment, as it is regarded as a privilege to use. Sign-in sheets for documenting student use will be maintained near each computer within the school.
  1. All computer use at school by students shall be limited to class assignments or school-related projects.
  1. Food, drinks, or candy should not be consumed near any computers.
  1. Floppy disks and/or CD’s may only be used with prior approval. If  disks are brought from home, they must be scanned for viruses before using them.
  1. Work that is done on the computer should be saved to a floppy disk, not the computer’s hard drive. (Floppy disks are available from the computer lab.)
  1. Do not delete any files, other than your own, from the computer’s hard drive or the network.
  1. No one, except the network manager, is allowed to install or download any software onto a computer’s hard drive.
  1. Desktops, screen savers, graphic resolution, or other settings should not be changed on any machine.
  1. Do not print endless files or websites. Select (highlight) what you wish to print and only print materials relevant to your research by choosing the Print Selection item on the printer window. (This will conserve time, ink, as well as paper.) Another method is to select (highlight) the material you need, then copy it, and paste it into a Microsoft Word document.
  1. Always use “Print Preview” before sending a document to the printer. This way you’ll know if everything will appear on the page that you are sending to the printer. All items will print on the Laser Printer located in the computer lab. (Teachers may collect items at any time. Students should wait until the end of a class period.)
  1. Report any error messages or malfunctions of the computers or printers to the network manager ASAP.
  1. Remember: Leave the workstation the way you would like to find it, in a neat and orderly manner.
  1. E-mail (parish-wide) Students are not allowed e-mail privileges.
    1. Chain letters should not be sent or forwarded. (let me know if you have received one)
    2. Large files, such as PowerPoint presentations, should not be sent using school e-mail.

Computer Lab Procedures (includes 15 General Guidelines)

  1. Foods, drinks, candy, and gum are NOT allowed in the lab.
  2. Students will enter quietly after cleansing their hands, and be seated at their assigned seats. Hands must be clean before using computers.
  3. Once at their seats, students should inspect their computer and desk space for prior    abuse, and report any damage to the lab teacher.
  4. Paper and pencil (if needed) for student use will be distributed upon arrival, and collected upon departure.
  5. Students are expected to sit up straight in their chairs, keep both feet on the floor (or as near to the floor as they can get), and keep all four chair legs on the floor.
  6. There are many wires and connections for the computers to work, students should not tamper with them. Students sitting at the center tables and the tables near the closets must be careful to avoid the network drops that are located on the floor.
  7. Listen carefully and follow the directions.
  8. Students will work to the best of their ability on their assignments. A grade will be given on the work that you do in the computer lab.
  9. If  HELP is needed or you have a question, students should quietly put the cup on top of their monitor, and one of the teachers will come to your assistance.
  10. Headphones are available for students to use. Remove them from the top of the tower and place them over your ears. A volume control is located on the headphone wire to adjust the volume higher or lower. (If you would rather not use the headphones, the volume control should be at its lowest setting, so it does not disturb others.) Remember to return the headphones to their places after you have used them.
  11. Students should not change the adjustments on the monitor or computer at any time. (Don’t press the buttons on the monitor.)
  12. Keyboards should remain on the desk at an angle (the legs are up.)
    • Students should NOT attempt to type on their neighbor’s keyboard.
    • Pencils or erasers are NOT for pressing keys – use your fingers.
    • It is not necessary to bang on the keyboard, a light touch is all that is needed.
  13. About 2-3 minutes before the end of your class time, you will EXIT the program you are using.
  14. Collect your materials to be returned.
  15. Gather any paper that needs to be thrown away so you can put it in the garbage can on your way out.
  16. Wait to be dismissed by areas of the classroom. Push in your chairs, so people don’t trip.

The above procedures and guidelines are subject to change as new technologies evolve.
