EVERGREEN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS
1.
ID
Cards
A.
All
Evergreen students must wear their school-issued ID card at all times.
ID cards must be worn on a lanyard.
The following procedures will be used for all ID card violations:
First Offense
Recorded in gradebook, warning, issued temporary ID
Second Offense
Recorded in gradebook, warning, issued temporary ID,
punishwork assigned.
Third Offense
ID letter sent to parent, issued temporary ID, conduct grade
lowered
one letter grade
Fourth Offense
Office referral, alternative to/or suspension
Subsequent Offenses Office
referral, alternative to/or suspension
Students must wear ID cards in order to attend
dances, pep rallies, and other student activities. No snackshop purchases will be allowed without an ID.
Students without an ID must go to the end of the lunch line.
Temporary ID cards are not acceptable for these activities.
NOTE: ID card violations will
accumulate by grading periods. If
an ID is lost or stolen, a replacement must be purchased. Replacement ID cards cost $4.00.
Replacement lanyards cost $1.00.

In
conjunction with the “Zero Tolerance Policy” all fighting is strictly
prohibited. All parties will
be suspended/expelled and the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office will
take the fighters into custody.
A.
Disturbing
the peaceful operation of a school campus may also result in suspension
and/or arrest. This includes
threats, false rumors, and loud or abusive language.
3.
In
accordance with Terrebonne Parish School Board policy, “students found
to be using, distributing, or in possession of weapons, illegal drugs,
alcohol, and unauthorized telecommunication devices (beepers, etc.) shall
be recommended for expulsion as indicated in La. RS 17:416, and shall be
reported to law enforcement officials immediately.”
4.
Any
cigarettes, matches, lighters, fireworks, explosives, mice, snakes, etc.
are not permitted on our school grounds or in the possession of any
student. This includes
anything considered dangerous or likely to cause a disturbance.
All such objects will be confiscated and student will be subjected
to disciplinary action including possible suspension or expulsion.
A.
Smoking
by juveniles is against the law and may result in a student being
arrested.
5.
In
the interest of safety, running or tag playing in the school building, on
the sidewalks and any part of our covered areas is prohibited.
A.
In
the interest of student safety, the gathering or moving of large groups of
students (more than 5 or 6) is prohibited.
6.
Students
are not allowed to have in their possession cameras, radios, cassette
players, cassette tapes, cd players, cds, or other electronic devices.
Possession of such objects invites theft, disturbs class, and has
no purpose on a school campus. Felt tip markers and liquid paper are also
not allowed since these objects can be used to vandalize school property.
7.
No
one may sell anything on the campus without approval of the principal.
8.
Our
school building and grounds represent a tremendous investment by
taxpayers; therefore, everyone must help keep our building and grounds
neat and clean as possible. Students
will be required to pay the actual cost of any equipment damaged willfully
and neglectfully.
9.
It
is expected that all students will conduct themselves as young ladies and
young gentlemen and show the proper pride and respect due themselves,
their fellow students, their teachers, their administrators, and all other
school employees.
10.
Physical
public display of affection is prohibited.
Examples: hand
holding, hugging or kissing.
11.
All
Evergreen students are prohibited from driving cars or motor bikes to or
from school. This includes
any part of the school day.
12.
Students
with infectious diseases may not attend school until the disease is no
longer contagious. In some
cases a doctor’s release may be required.
Lice infestation will also require a student to be sent home.
13.
All
students are expected to proceed in a quiet and orderly manner during any
fire drill or other emergency drill.
No students are allowed in the parking lot during fire drills.
14.
Games
involving rough physical contact are prohibited.
15.
The
rear patio area is off limits but may be used for changing of classes.
Except in cases of inclement weather, the covered area between the
gym and cafeteria is off limits during the lunch break.
Only students in the lunch or snackshop lines are permitted in this
area. Students may stand
between the cafeteria and parking lot when lunch lines are finished.
16.
Students
are permitted to use the lobby area of the first floor to go to and from
the rest rooms and water fountains. Other
doors are not to be used except for class changes.
17.
In
the morning and at the lunch period, students must not loiter or remain in
the lobby area, stairways, nor within the stairwell areas.
No students will be permitted on the 2nd floor or in the 300 hall
unless they are going to the library or to a classroom where a teacher is
present. The library and
cafeteria are opened as study halls every morning.
Students must use the two center stairways to go to and from the
library.
18.
After
the dismissal bell, students are not permitted to remain in the building.
At 2:20 the front doors will be locked.
A.
Students
who walk home after school must exit the campus by 2:20 p.m.
B.
Students
are not allowed to remain after school unless properly supervised by
approved school personnel.
C.
Students
who walk to school are not to arrive before 7:00 a.m.
19.
All
traffic in the building should be directed towards the right; this
includes the usage of stairways and doors.
20.
Restricted
Areas
A.
The
area on the Thibodaux side of the building between the main building and
the fence.
B.
Front
lawn beyond the front sidewalk.
C.
The
back yard area behind the choir, band, industrial arts rooms, and
classrooms G-1 and G-2.
D.
Rear
patio area.
21.
Students
are cautioned about leaving their valuables unattended!
At no time should money or jewelry be placed as an invitation to
the thief. It is almost
impossible for teachers/administrators to recover these items.
Students are furnished locks for their hall lockers and P.E.
baskets. An “unlocked”
padlock serves no useful purpose! Do
not give your combination to anyone.
22.
All
student collections will be coordinated through the homeroom teacher with
prior approval from the administration.
23.
Students
who cut class or leave school without permission will be disciplined.
24.
For
cheating on a daily quiz, weekly assignment, major test, or semester
examination, the student will receive and “F” on that test or
assignment and will receive an “F” in conduct for that particular
grading period.
25.
Policy
regarding failure to dress out for P.E. during a grading period:

Students are given the option of clean uniform rental
on every non-dress out offense. The
policy will not apply unless this option is rendered.
26.
Buses
A.
All
students riding buses are under the supervision of the bus driver and must
obey bus regulations. The bus
and bus stop are considered school board property.
Offenses on the school bus are handled in the same way as offenses
on the school campus.
B.
Ride
only the bus to which you have been assigned.
Students who must ride a different bus from time to time must bring
a note with a parent signature and telephone number. The note must be presented to the school secretary before
school so that parental permission can be confirmed.
An administrator will sign the note before returning it to the
student.
27.
Attendance
A.
Regular
attendance is required if a student is to achieve desirable results from
his schoolwork.
B.
In accordance with the Terrebonne Parish attendance policy, students
with an excess of twenty (20) absences may fail for the year regardless of
grades earned. Louisiana
state law requires that students with excessive absences must also be
referred to court. Absences
due to signing-out will accumulate resulting in similar consequences.
Ninth grade students may
fail if they accumulate 10 absences during one semester or 5 absences for
½ unit courses.
C.
Exceptions
to minimum attendance requirements will be granted only if one or more of
the following conditions are in evidence:
1.
Extended
personal illness as verified by a physician and/or other extenuating
circumstances as approved by the parish supervisors of child welfare and
attendance, in consultation with the principal.
2.
Documented
medical data showing that the student suffered a series of unusual
extended illnesses.
3.
Evidence
of a catastrophic, personal occurrence in the home, which has caused the
student to miss a disproportionate number of days of school.
D.
A
written dated excuse for absenteeism is required on the day the student
returns to school or the following day.
Only homeroom teachers will be responsible for collected excuses
submitted by students after an absence from school.
1.Should
a student fail to bring his/her excuse for an absence on their return,
they are reminded of the policy and are asked to make an effort to bring
an excuse the second day. If
no excuse is presented on the second day the teacher will writer “no
ex” next to the respective date(s) on the absentee card.
28.
Make-Up
Work
A.
The
student should make arrangements with classroom teachers the first day
he/she returns to school to make up work missed within three (3) days of
his/her return to school. Extended
periods of absence will be handled on an individual basis. Work not made up will result in an “F” for all
assignments missed.
B.
Suspended
students receive an “F” for all work missed during the duration of the
suspension.
29.
Tardiness
to school.
A.
Excessive
tardiness to school will result in referral to child welfare or juvenile
court.
1.
Should
you arrive at school tardy, it is mandatory to report to the guidance
office for an admit slip. This will prevent the student from being
considered tardy to class.
2.
A
parent or guardian must sign the student in to school if they are
responsible for the late arrival.
3.
Acceptable
excuses for tardiness to school are a doctor's excuse or a late bus.

31.
Tardiness to class
A. Students
must be in the classroom by the time the tardy bell sounds to begin class.
Teacher shall document every occurrence of tardiness and take
appropriate action per class.
Consequences for tardiness to class:
1st offense
Record in Grade Book, warning issued.
2nd offense
Warned and recorded, Conduct grade for grading period lowered
two (2) grades if two (2) tardies occur in the same grading period.
3rd offense
Tardy letter to be sent to parent, lower conduct grade to an
“F”: if the
3 tardies are in the same grading period.
4th offense
Alternative to/or Suspension

32. Evergreen
is a Closed Campus
A. No
student is permitted to leave the school grounds during the school day
unless they are signed out by a legal guardian or have the permission of
an administrator.
B. Students
who have dietary problems verified by a doctor’s excuse may leave at
noon. Transportation must be
furnished.
33. Signing
Out:
A.
A
student may sign out because of sickness or emergency.
B.
No
student shall be released into the custody of any person without the
written permission of the child’s parent or legal guardian. If the child cannot recognize the visitor calling for the
child’s release, even though he may have the written permission of the
parent, a school official shall get further verification from the parents
or legal guardian that the child should be released into the custody of
said person. In those cases where parents are divorced or legally separated, a child
shall be released to either parent of the child. Unless
a court awards sole custody of a child to a parent, the school is required
to treat both parents as having equal custody.
C.
It
is important to remember that signing out of school counts as an absence
for part of the day and can lead to failure.
34. Telephone
A.
The
telephone in the office may be used only is the case of emergencies with
permission from the secretary or administrators. The secretary or administrators will make other calls.
35. Students are not allowed to chew gum on campus.
36.
Illness
and Medical Service:
A.
A
student may sign out because of illness.
B.
Principals,
teachers and other employees shall not administer medication to pupils in
the public schools of the parish except when special circumstances exist
for a health problem that can be expected to be of a long duration.
When such special circumstances exist, employees are authorized to
administer medication according to the following regulations:
1.
Written
orders from a physician detailing the name of the drug, dosage, and time
interval medication are to be taken.
2.
Written
request and permission from the parent or guardian of the student
requesting that the school district comply with the physician’s order.
3.
Medication
must be brought to the school administration office in a container
appropriately labeled by a pharmacy or physician.
4.
Each
medication given must be recorded on a medication log, which includes
date, time, dosage, and signature of person giving medications.
37.
Students
attending or participating in EJHS activities must be picked up within 30
minutes of the conclusion of the event.
Students not picked up may forfeit the privilege of attending
subsequent school sponsored activities.
38.
In
order to insure continuous effort on the part of the students throughout
the grading period while working on major class projects, the following
will apply:
Students who fail to turn in a major class project will receive two
“F’s” for the project. If
the project is worked on in class for a majority of the grading period,
the student will receive an “F” for the grading period regardless of
other grades received for that grading period.
Major projects will be determined by the school administration with
a written policy for being given to each student outlining the value of
each project.

39.
Gifts,
flowers, balloon bouquets, fast food, or other such items are not to be
delivered to students at Evergreen Junior High School.
40.
Rewards
for Good Behavior
A.
Dances
will be held periodically during the year.
Only Evergreen students may attend our dances. Any Evergreen student in good standing (no suspensions) may
attend these dances. Students
who are unable to attend a dance may become eligible to attend the next
dance by improving their behavior during the interim.
B.
Other
events will be scheduled throughout the school year to reward students for
good positive behavior.
