Red Words "Tap and Sweep"
* Red Words are words
that cannot be sounded out (phonetically irregular).
- Teacher says word.
- Student repeats word.
- Student says letter names while tapping each letter on arm from top of arm down.
- Then returns to top of arm and sweeps hand down arm while saying the word.

Skywriting
Teacher snaps fingers twice.
Students raise first two fingers of writing hand in air.
Student traces sound(s) in air.
Student sweeps fingers under sound or word and recites the sound or word.
NOTE: If skywriting is used for Red Words follow numbers 1 and 2 but students
are to spell the word (say letter names rather than letter sounds) in the air and then
draw a box around the word. |

Finger Scissors
Use first two fingers like scissors to clip
consonant sound. |

Hammer and Sweep
Teacher places letters on word building mat.
Student uses fist to tap out each letter sound and sweeps under words while blending
letters to say the word.
Teacher has student use new word in a sentence.
NOTE: If a child is reading a story and has
trouble with a word just do step 2. |

Finger Spelling
Teacher says word.
Students repeat word.
Beginning with thumb, students hold up a finger for each sound as the individual
sounds are said out loud and sequenced to complete whole word.
Bring fingers back together in a fist and say entire word.
Students record word on paper, chalkboard, memory box, etc.

Say sound out loud while forming the symbols in the sand using index finger of
writing hand. |
