| Bourg School first opened its doors in 1913 to serve the
needs of a growing, though small, community. From this facility have come many outstanding
citizens of Terrebonne Parish. Plans for the building were formulated in 1910 under the direction of the State Superintendent of Education at that time - Mr. T. H. Harris. The school first served as a rural high school. It was a Vocational school offering courses in agriculture for boys and home economics for girls. Children were first transported to and from school by a horse-drawn wagon operated by Mr. Ruffin Hotard. Later, in 1916, Mr. Emile Hebert began transporting the children from the lower section of the community in a boat named the "Transfer". This boat, of wood construction and powered by a gasoline engine, could carry 50 to 60 children. Everyone living within one mile of the school walked - rain or shine, warm weather or cold. Later, after the road was graveled, Mr. Hebert acquired a model "T" Ford bus. This vehicle was an affair with canvas curtains on either side. The same rule held, however, if you lived within a mile of the school you walked. As Mr. Hebert also operated a grocery store, the bus also served as a means to deliver groceries on Saturdays. The first principal at Bourg High School was Mr. A.J. Cormier. Most of the teachers were from out of the parish, so they lived with area families. Mr. M. L. Funderburk was appointed principal in 1920. He served in this capacity until 1924. It was in this year that the last graduation exercises were held at the school. The graduating class was comprised of three students as follows: Mabel Aucoin, valedictorian, Loura Champagne, salutatorian, and Floride Dubois. Beginning in 1925 the school was consolidated, and students from the ninth grade on were transported to Terrebonne High School in Houma. At the time, students graduated after completing eleven grades. The old Bourg School building is still in use, but has undergone changes. The belfry has been removed, and a wing has been added on either side. Bourg Elementary School now offers only grades K-4.
